Inspiration

I help small businesses improve their online presence. While Alt Text is highly recommended for accessibility, SEO, and now GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), it is resource-intensive. Small business owners lack the time and specialized knowledge to write effective descriptions. I initially used Gemini for social and web photos, but the output was often "chatty"—you had to dig through a lot of data to find the one line you actually needed. I decided to build a tool in Google AI Studio to strip away the noise and focus on what marketers actually need: precision, persona, and speed.

What it does

AltTexty is a straightforward platform designed to produce high-quality metadata for various platforms. Batch Processing: Handle individual photos or batches of up to 30 images. OCR Intelligence: It reads text within designed visuals to ensure no message is lost. Persona Integration: Users can add a brand persona to adjust the tone and compliance level. *History & Export: * Save results for future use or export them directly to your workflow.

How we built it

As a product designer, I started with deep research into user journeys and feature sets using Gemini. I then moved to Google AI Studio to bring the logic to life. By adjusting the system instructions, I was able to fine-tune the multimodal features to recognize the difference between a simple "photo" and a "conversion-driven marketing asset."

Challenges we ran into

I initially experimented with another AI platform, but it failed to produce the accurate, high-quality alt text I required. Even though the interface looked similar to my vision, the "reasoning" behind the descriptions was shallow. Switching to Gemini's native features provided the breakthrough needed to capture nuanced context and brand voice.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’ve made a "pro" tool that is easy for anyone to use. I am particularly proud of the Screen Reader Simulation, which allows sighted users to hear how their content is experienced by others.

What we learned

I learned that in the era of GEO, Alt Text is the bridge between human inclusivity and machine indexing. If the AI can't read your image, your brand is effectively invisible to the next generation of search.

What's next for AltTexty

The goal is to launch AltTexty as a standalone web app and eventually develop plugins for no-code web design platforms to eliminate the need for copy-pasting entirely.
