We live in an age of connection overload, yet emotional isolation. Social media has become performative — it's about likes and aesthetics, not authentic expression. Meanwhile, AI chat platforms like Character.ai or Replika are deeply personal but disconnected from the broader social world.

AlterYou is the world’s first AI-powered social network, where people create their own AI persona — a personality-driven, conversational version of themselves.

They don’t just make a character.
They build an Alter — an AI version of themselves that talks, responds, and reflects their true personality.

Other people can:

  • Ask questions
  • Share thoughts
  • Talk about things they’d never say face-to-face

And the best part?
You — the creator — get to see how people are connecting with your Alter.
No names. No pressure. Just real conversations.

📲 How It Works

  • You sign up and land on a clean, mobile-friendly homepage.
  • Scroll through a public feed of Alters — each one made by a real person.
  • Tap any Alter to start chatting immediately.
  • Want to create your own? Just tap Create Alter.
  • Fill in a few details — name, age, vibe, personality sliders, interests, tone.
  • And your digital self is now live.

People can now talk to your AI — even while you sleep.
And you’ll get private insights like:

“3 people chatted with your Alter today.”
“A 21-year-old girl from Delhi asked: ‘Do you believe in love at first sight?’”

No usernames. No social pressure. Just authentic, anonymous interaction.

🛠️ How We Built It

AlterYou is a full-stack real-time AI social network. Users create a personalized AI Persona (called an Alter) that chats with others — publicly, socially, and intelligently.

We designed the system with scalable AI infrastructure, real-time messaging, and social identity at its core.

🔧 Tech Stack:

  • Frontend: React (Vite), Tailwind CSS, Redux Toolkit, React Query
  • Backend: Supabase (Auth, Database, Realtime, Edge Functions)
  • AI Engine: Google Gemini 2.5 Flash (via Supabase Edge Functions)
  • Other Tools: Render, Pica (chat infra), Cron-job.org, ImageKit
  • Future Integrations:
    • ElevenLabs for real-time voice chat
    • Tavus for conversational video-to-video AI Alter calls

📚 What We Learned

  • Learned full-stack backend development using Supabase — from Auth to Realtime to Edge Functions.
  • Understood the power of prompt engineering for emotionally-aware AI personas.
  • Implemented streaming chat UI with optimistic updates and live AI responses.
  • Designed an emotionally expressive user experience — not just technical AI.

🧩 Challenges Faced

  • Realtime AI responses required managing race conditions, deduplication, and UI syncing.
  • Handling Gemini’s streaming output and integrating it with Supabase's Realtime features was complex.
  • Designing personality-driven prompts that feel unique, emotional, and safe was a constant iteration process.

🌟 Outcome

Built in under 30 days, AlterYou is more than a chatbot — it's a vision of the future of social identity. It reimagines your online self not as a static profile, but as a living digital being.

In the current MVP, users can:

  • Create highly personalized Alters by choosing gender, age, vibe (e.g., Chill, Romantic), personality sliders (e.g., Introvert–Extrovert), and interests.
  • Talk to anyone’s Alter in real-time — every chat feels social, not transactional.
  • See live message streaming and receive unique AI replies that reflect the Alter’s personality.
  • Experience a system that mimics real-world social interaction — Alters aren’t tools, they’re personalities.

  • 📱 Mobile-Optimized Experience: AlterYou is built mobile-first with responsive layouts and swipeable chat.
