The problem
Alpine skiing is a discipline that used to have bad weather conditions, especially low visibility.
The race staff has to ensure that racers go through the right side of the gates. The trainers try to film their racers to analyze the race and improve the trace on further races
What it does
We have created a system with ultrasonic sensors to be installed on each gate to not only validate that the racer passed it through the right side, but also provides a enhanced live time for the viewers and what's most important, accurate telemetry for the racer team to allow professionals to improve the trace on each gate and obtain better results on further races
How we built it
Hardware: We have used a raspberry pi with 5 ultra sonic sensors
Software: Backend: We have used python to code the logic of the tool, and a sqlite database to store all data. Frontend: Flask python based app to show data in real time for the enhanced live time tracking.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to combine hardware and software on our first hackathon We are proud of the results we got in 24 hours and how we managed to fix all little issues we had over the weekend. We are also happy on how we managed the team working. Little things, but everything counts :)
What we learned
We learned how to interact with hardware/sensors with python, how to work as a team (one team, one fight), and what's most important, we met other participants and learned a lot from them!
What's next for Alpine Skiing Live time tracker with telemetry
We plan to finish the website, make some changes on the code and try it by end of the year on a real ski slope in Spain!
