Inspiration
I've always been fascinated by the art of trading and wanted to make the decision-making process a little easier. Rather than predicting the market, I wanted to help traders identify statistically stronger opportunities, understand portfolio risk, and make more informed investment decisions. That goal became the driving force behind AlphaEngine.
What it does
- Screen the Nifty 500 by sector and technical filters
- Select candidate stocks from the screener output
- Optimize weights using Markowitz mean-variance optimization
- Simulate outcomes via Monte Carlo (GBM + bootstrap)
- Explain the portfolio in plain English using AI advisor
How I built it
I started by researching the Nifty 500 and how companies are classified by sector. After importing and organizing historical market data with pandas and SQLite, I built a stock screener that supports sector-based filtering and technical indicators such as SMA, EMA, and volatility. From there, I implemented portfolio optimization using Markowitz Mean-Variance Optimization and added Monte Carlo simulations using NumPy to estimate potential future portfolio performance. Finally, I integrated an AI-powered advisor that explains portfolio characteristics in plain English.
Challenges I ran into
This was my first time building a big project like this one from scratch without any help from others. I needed to familiarize myself with the interface of VScode and github. Learning Git and Bash was surprisingly challenging at first. I also realised I didn't know a lot of things when i started this project. I was a complete newbie to ideas like creating a virtual environment, creating a structured repo file system, SQLite working and many more which ended up in me having to veer off course to learn about all these first.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
My journey from a complete beginner to a person to completed their first real project. I wouldn't stop calling myself a beginner just yet. I've so much more I've yet to learn.
What I learned
Beyond portfolio construction, I learned how to structure a real software project, work with SQLite databases, organize code into reusable modules, use Git for version control, implement financial algorithms, and build applications that combine data analysis with AI.
What's next for AlphaEngine
AlphaEngine has a WIDE scope that can keep expanding. Paper trading, Portfolio alerts and notifications, Multi-user accounts with authentication, Cloud deployment with PostgreSQL instead of SQLite, Mobile-responsive interface or native mobile app, Support for US markets (S&P 500, NASDAQ) and multi-currency portfolios
