ALPHA ODDS

Inspiration

DeFi is largely based on speculation and the players who truly benefit are VC's, whales and those with access to Alpha.

In looking to build a DeFi based dApp which would onboard new users into Web3 we accepted that DeFi is largely speculative and only provides benefit for those who are deeply involved in the ecosystem.

If a new DeFi user does not understand how the protocol they are using works or what the token they are investing in actually represents they are likely to end up as exit liquidity.

Prediction markets are similar to the existing narrative trading which takes place and has the additional benefit of allowing participants to speculate on markets (outside of crypto) which they understand or have some insight into.

In reading the Celo whitepaper we noticed there is a predicted move towards Futarchical Governance which we would like to contribute towards longterm.

What it does

ALPHA ODDS is a prediction market platform which allows for speculation on any future based outcomes. The platform facilitates the creation of markets relevant to current trends and events (eg. Olympics, Cricket World Cup, Politics)

ALPHA ODDS currently has one open market which allows for users to bet on two outcomes relating to the Celo DeFi and Trading Hackathon. The YES outcome will be executed if ALPHA ODDS is selected as one of the top 3 teams. The NO outcome will be executed if ALPHA ODDS is not selected as one of the top 3 teams.

• Time constraints
• Identifying and creating the smart contract, with the necessary functions
• Creating a frontend where the user can connect their metamask wallet
• Refining the scope of the project idea, and focus on MVP

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Settling on Prediction Markets
• Successfully deploying the prediction market contract on Celo Mainnet
• Front-end design
• Deploying "connect wallet" function

What we learned

• How to deploy a smart contract to Celo mainnet
• How envio works and how their product can be used in conjunction with celo
• Project scope management
• Needing to create events within the smart contract, so those events can be indexed on chain
• How a prediction market concept is defined and how it can be engaging for users within a DApp
