Inspiration
We were inspired by the lack of simple and accessible resources there were available. Elena and I wanted to create something that didn't yet exist but was easy to code and use.
What it does
Almond Environment gives the people of New York City easy access to websites and news articles about the main issues impacting their city.
How we built it
We built AE using HTML and CSS. Elena and I are very new to coding and had to teach ourselves the basics of these two languages before starting to build our website.
Challenges we ran into
At first, we struggled to come up with an idea for our project. And, once we did, we had trouble figuring out the correct code for it. We lost hope for a bit, but then we had a breakthrough and a newly gained motivation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are definitely proud of our final project, for starters. We are also extremely proud of the confidence we gained over the course of the weekend, and our abilities to quickly learn the basics of coding.
What we learned
Elena and I have never coded before, or been a part of a hackathon. We learned about how much work it takes to code even just a small project like ours. We learned about the different jobs that having a hobby like coding can lead to, and about the importance of patience in this field. Overall, it was a very interesting experience for both of us.
What's next for Almond Environment
We hope to get Almond Environment up and running and publish it for the public to use. We know how scary it can seem to try to find information on the internet in this day and age.
