Problem statement
- Population over 65 years of age is increasing
- Most older adults prefer to age in place. Covid pandemic has affected the care homes extremely hard
- Families not close. Home care services suffer from chronic lack of staffing
- Unnecessary or premature admission to long term residential care
- Technology is too fragmented and/or not designed for older adults
Solution
Analysing that data using ML can create better insights and help the elderly adult, their carer and their family. The data can provide meaningful insights.
Current off the shelf devices such as fitness trackers from Gramin or more specialized connected devices such the ones from Withings provide a large number of data points, in many cases 24/7.
Smart home sensors and devices are providing another data stream that can give a better perspective an context
Smart speakers (Alexa) can be used to provide insights, notifications, encouragements to older person without the need for a tablet (that can be left uncharged)
Smart speakers like Alexa or Google Nest/Home can be programmed to provide additional support and work as specialized assistants.
Combining multiple data source and using such delivery mechanisms, that require no specialist installation, are reasonably priced, tried and tested enables us to deliver a powerful solution with low barriers of entry.
Prototype use cases
Adhering to routines are necessary in many situations, especially so in a medical context. Tablets and smartphones are a great tool but many older adults would struggle with the small screen, would forget to charge it etc. We are showing how such a smart speaker would
- help an elderly person take their medication properly by providing an assistant that would remind, help and record the outcome of such activity.
- remind and explain how to wash their hands properly (amazon skillID 859069f7-19f8-47b4-98ed-34f61ce3f072, still in review)
- provide the latest medical news (including COVID related one) from trusted and reliable sources
