Inspiration
The idea came from recognizing the value that alumni networks can offer to both graduates and current students, including career advice, mentorship, and networking opportunities. The Alumni Gathering Network aims to bridge this gap by building an easy-to-use web platform.
What it does
The Alumni Gathering Network connects alumni and students based on their interests, location, industry, and career goals. The platform allows users to create profiles, join discussions on message boards, participate in alumni events, and search for mentors in their field of interest.
How we built it
The project is built using PHP for backend processing, MySQL for data storage, CSS for styling, and HTML for page structure. The backend handles user registration, profile management, and session tracking. MySQL is used to manage and query user data, event information, and message boards, ensuring quick access and secure storage. CSS and HTML handle the front-end design and layout, creating a user-friendly interface.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges included implementing a secure login system with PHP and managing relational data efficiently in MySQL. Styling for compatibility across devices was also challenging, as it required careful attention to responsive design using CSS and HTML.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of building a functional platform that supports user profiles, messaging, and event coordination using PHP and MySQL. Achieving a clean, responsive design with just HTML and CSS was another accomplishment, as it made the platform accessible on both desktop and mobile devices.
What we learned
We learned a lot about optimizing PHP for web applications, managing complex SQL queries in MySQL, and designing responsive layouts with CSS. Working on this project also enhanced our understanding of data security and user session management.
What's next for Alumni Gathering Network
Future improvements include adding a more interactive message board, a calendar for event scheduling, and possibly a mentorship matching feature. Additionally, we plan to implement more advanced CSS animations and incorporate AJAX for smoother data loading and page transitions.
