Inspiration
Our inspiration was based on our personal experience with feeling uneasy while walking anywhere alone. In our relatively safe and affluent community of 4S Ranch, there was recently an incident where a fellow student was followed by a man driving a truck when she was walking home from school. He was only deterred after she had called her father and the police and had reached her home. We were inspired by incidences like this and other acts of violence towards women all around the world.
What it does
Alley Alert functions as a map that depicts the safety rating for streets around a person's location. For example, a user can be able to view how safe the streets around them are before they begin walking towards their destination, so that they can choose the safest possible route to take. Other users are able to leave safety ratings for a particular street and can leave reviews if necessary.
How we built it
We designed a html website. We embedded a google map onto it. We also have a still image and we coded a form submission for users to submit their coordinate location beneath it. The coordinates create a zone selector on the map. After that users will be able to see the safety ratings for the streets around them.
Challenges we ran into
Embedding the map into the html website was very difficult. We ran into many javascript console errors. It was very difficult to get the zone coordinates to work because we were unfamiliar with the coordinate system.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to successfully create a html website in the allotted time because for all three of us this was our first experience with coding a website.
What we learned
What's next for Alley Alert
We want to incorporate more AI. We want to incorporate a credibility system when the users input their information. For example, if a user inputs a safety rating that greatly differs from other ratings submitted by users then the AI system will deem the user to not be credible and will value their rating less. Also, the rating will be dynamic and will change as more users input their ratings. Also, the AI will be able to guess the ratings of other streets based on the ratings of other areas.
