Inspiration
Wanting to focus on an aspect of healthcare, we decided to choose a topic that'd be particularly impactful. With over 50 million Americans suffering from allergies yearly, we thought an informational guide to everything allergies would be a great help to our community.
What it does
AllerGenie is an informational app which identifies and describes all common allergens, and provides users with resources like a pollen map, an air quality map, a source to buy EpiPens, buttons that dial the National Allergy Hotline and 911, a daily check-in, and a guide to performing first-aid treatment on those who are undergoing an allergic response.
How we built it
Utilizing simple but effective drop-down menus through the .Visible block in MIT App Inventor, we ensured our UI would be especially user-friendly, with simple and easy-to-understand information and easy access to multitudes of information.
Challenges we ran into
Navigating a new platform through which we developed an app was a roadblock at first, but MIT App Inventor's resources were more than enough to compensate for the learning curve involved.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Qualifying past the preliminary round within our NAF Academy was certainly something to be proud of, allowing us to distinguish ourselves before our peers.
What we learned
Through the building of our app, we learned more about the challenges faced by those with allergies, as well as some more knowledge in this particular field of medicine.
What's next for AllerGenie
Aside from the opportunity to win, we hope to expand this app in meaningful ways, building a serious platform through which those affected by allergies have a resource they can trust and use to manage their allergy-related needs. Through polishing the source code, adding more screens, and investing even more time and effort, we know that the potential for this app can be met and surpassed.
