Inspiration
We have many friends who have severe food allergies. This could range from seafood, nuts, or dairy. That means when going to restaurants they have to be careful what they order because it could mean life or death for them. This applies to food buffets as well. Since most food buffets you serve yourself and you use the same tongs sometimes people would cross contaminate and that could lead to one of our friends getting an allergic reaction. This pushed us to create Allergen Tongs which detects when tongs have touched an allergen.
What it does
The Allergen Tongs are similar to regular tongs but they have a sensor inside that detects the pH difference in food. It then tells you on a screen what allergen it detected and a red light to show that it has detected an allergen.
How we built it
We built the Allergen Tongs in Autodesk Fusion 360
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into were time constraints and the inability to put much detail into our product. As well as, the grips for the tongs were hard to CAD, because they were an organic shape.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our idea and that it could be used to stop cross-contamination.
What we learned
We learned that good ideas are just branches of past ideas.
What's next for Allergen Tongs
Next for Allergen Tongs is to give it more personality and customization for customers.
