Inspiration
At first I was unsure what project to take on, there were many good ones already out there. I either had to build a project that was better than an existing solution or come up with a solution for a problem, that hasn't existed yet. I watched the video "How J.P. Morgan Uses Tech For Social Good | J.P." In that video Ali talked about social tech and the project they took on: one a mapping tool to allocate resources and another for service dogs to get assistance in emergencies. This led me to think on a personal impact, and then I remembered my late Uncle, who has a differently abled daughter of 24 years, an older son at 28 and a younger at 13. He told my Mom, if anything were to ever happen, "please take care of my daughter". Now those words spoke volumes to me. He could have asked for anything or even asked to look after his younger son also, but he was considering what was plausible and decided to request for his daughter. As a father he knew and saw the struggles his daughter would have to go through and for him not to be there, hurts more than anything. I then considered the situation we're all currently in (COVID) and decided to filter out people who needed help the most. I figured most people can reach out to social media or other organizations online, but about those who can't? What about the blind? That's what led to the idea for this app.
What it does
It's a braille system app that uses haptic feedback and sound cues to assist the blind in efficiently inputting text to messaging apps. With AI assistance (Alissa) for correction or to read and guide the user.
How I built it
I designed the app in Figma. I haven't completed the app but I was going to implement it using Swift, UI Kit, Cocoapods and firebase.
Challenges I ran into
The hardest part of this app was design, it took most of the time because something like this already existed physically but it's hard to implement Braille in existing technologies that can replicate the feel of touch.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud to have venture out and found a solution for an abstract community out there. The reach is only limited to the technology and network within their community.
What I learned
I learned how to brainstorm and implement UI/UX. I learnt how to tie everything together in a full stack.
What's next for Alissa
Actually coding Alissa. Eventually implementing an AI and implementing it locally.
