Aligned

Inspiration:

I don't know about you, but I am constantly thinking about making the right career moves to better fit my ideal lifestyle. We know that the simple advice of "find your passion" is vague at best and distracting at worst. Passion is created through good and meaningful work, albeit one with a good fit for your skills. I've struggled for years in a variety of settings to find what fits, and rarely found conclusive answers without having to pay through the nose for career counselling. So instead I wanted to build a tool that helps people get an evidence-based approach to their individual needs, all at the price of a cup of coffee. That's Aligned - a tool to bridge the gap between your skills, passions and interests into a fulfilling career and life.

What it does:

Aligned takes in how you would describe an ideal day in the life of you. It then takes the nitty gritty details of your job in terms of pay, hours, and other benefits you might want to prioritize. You can then weight these factors accordingly, seeing real-time tradeoffs. The final product is a totally customized recommendation and analysis of your goals and ideal lifestyle with suggestions for what to do next.

How we built it:

While I am a trained statistician and analyst, I am a complete novice in backend development. I relied heavily on bolt's LLM-based development tool to build this application. I made sure that all code and repositories were linked to my Github account for reproducibility, transparency, and for smarter minds than mine to contribute to future improvements.

Challenges we ran into:

Again, I am a novice developer. I am constantly generating ideas and often find few places to put them. My challenge here was culling the field of options to one for a project that interests me most!

Accomplishments that we're proud of:

It's built! People I know have used it! Even if this doesn't make a penny, that's a darn win for me right there.

What we learned:

Development doesn't require a PhD. As a statistician, I know the pains of hearing folks dabble too much and profess expertise (shoutout Dunning-Krueger), so I will not do the same here. I will simply say that I learned how much I love building things and shipping them. This is an awesome starting place for what I hope is continuous learning about the world of development.
