Inspiration
We noticed that people nowadays worry a lot about being judged by the people around them. A common phrase "Oh my god, this is so embarassing" is universal. With Alien8, we want people to communicate with no baggage and just be free. People can talk to each other without worrying about being judged based on their appearance.
What it does
Alien8 is a platform that allows users to video chat with anonymity. They can interact with other users (or their friends!), see and show their facial expressions and reactions without worrying about their appearance. It's a great place for people dealing with body-image issues who do not want to be seen.
According to research conducted by the Department of Psychology, Carnegie Mellon University, 36% of the people log on to anonymous chat rooms because they feel safe and 55% log on for being social.
How we built it
We have produced a video calling application that aims to assist people to meet like-minded individuals, focussing on their personalities rather than their appearance. We have achieved this through the use of alien AR filters and believe it’ll be a useful platform to network especially during the current pandemic, without being judged for your countenance.
Challenges we ran into
It was hard for us to implement the SDK we used for the AR filter because it runs on a python server. We found it a challenge to implement the SDK to our environment and we didn't any API keys to instantiate.
What we learned
We learn various ways we can use servers to communicate using the internet. Getting the server up and running was a tedious work since the hackathon was online, but we learned a quick way after making 3 different servers.
What's next for alienService
We need to build a global server so that this site is accessible to everyone around the world. No one should be suffering like Chewy :)
