Inspiration
The inspiration for Alien Rescue came from my love for sci-fi and the endless possibilities of the universe. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of humans playing a role in helping other lifeforms and wanted to create a game that combines adventure, teamwork, and strategy. This project is a love letter to exploration and the thrill of discovering the unknown.
What it does
Alien Rescue is an action-packed game where players save stranded aliens, the Orblats, from a hostile planet while fending off the menacing Morvaks. Players must transport Orblats to glowing teleporters scattered across the map, use weapons to fight off the Morvaks, and collect crystals for special abilities like increased speed and higher jumps. It’s a race against time to save as many Orblats as possible before the clock runs out.
How we built it
The project was built using:
- Meta Horizon Worlds: Leveraging the desktop editor to design the environment and gameplay mechanics.
- Blender: For creating and optimizing 3D models to use in the game.
- Code blocks: To program the game mechanics and interactions.
- I focused on features that align with my current skill level while leaving room for future enhancements.
A key part of the process was learning to optimize assets to ensure smooth performance within the game world.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was learning how to use new tools, such as Blender and the Meta Horizon editor. These tools required patience and practice to master. Another challenge was staying within my knowledge level while still pushing myself to create a compelling experience. For scripting, I focused on using code blocks, but I plan to transition to TypeScript in the future for more advanced mechanics.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I’m proud of creating a game that is both engaging and fun while overcoming steep learning curves in new tools and platforms. I successfully optimized the game environment and brought my vision to life. Being able to combine my love for sci-fi with interactive gameplay was an incredibly rewarding experience.
What we learned
Through this project, I learned:
- The importance of stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new challenges.
- How to use Blender for 3D modeling and optimize assets for performance.
- The basics of the Meta Horizon Desktop Editor and how to create a cohesive, interactive world.
- That with determination, I can achieve more than I initially thought possible.
What's next for Alien Rescue
If Alien Rescue really takes off, the next step is to expand the game with new levels and challenges. Future updates could include exploring different planets, each with unique environments, enemies, and objectives. This would elevate the game into a multi-level intergalactic adventure, giving players a richer and more immersive experience.
