Inspiration
Two of our closest friends have family restaurants. While working there, we realized the absurd amount of perfectly untouched food leftover that was being thrown out towards closing time. It is unfortunate to think that this much food was wasted while so many homeless people or people from low-income neighborhoods around us have difficulty accessing food. That's why we loved an idea of an application that connects people in need with food that would otherwise be in a landfill.
What it does
This application provides users with nearby locations that offer free food that would have been wasted.
How we built it
We incorporated geoapify API to retrieve all restaurants within a certain radius We used HTML and CSS to design a modern home page with search and navigation bars for easy access We also used bootstrap to help design our login/register page.
Challenges we ran into
As beginners, we struggled with gaining access and setting up the API successfully. A lot of APIs either cost money or are not very beginner friendly. It was also difficult to move elements where we want them
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-Team coordination in a large project and strict deadline.
What we learned
We learned how to use APIs and -How to use CSS grid and flexbox to enhance the design of the webpage and use javascript to add functionality.
What's next for Alice's Food Pantry
-Improving the style of the website (CSS) -Hosting the website on a server rather than on the local machine. -Improving the security of the website. (hash passwords on serverside rather than hashing passwords on the spot) (Cleaning user input) -Allowing users to possibly leave reviews on the restaurants
