Inspiration

Algorithms are often taught through code, textbooks, and static diagrams. But what if learning them felt more like playing a game on your TV?

We wanted to explore how Amazon Fire TV could turn algorithm learning into an interactive, shared-screen experience. Instead of passively reading about sorting and searching, players could predict what happens next, make decisions using a remote, and see algorithms come alive.

What is Algorithm Arena?

Algorithm Arena is a TV-first interactive learning game designed for Amazon Fire TV. Players take on short algorithm challenges, predict the next step in an operation, and learn through visual feedback.

The goal is to make fundamental computer science concepts more engaging, accessible, and fun to explore on a big screen.

Planned Features

  • Interactive algorithm challenges: Predict the next step in algorithms such as Bubble Sort.
  • Visual algorithm animations: Watch array elements move and change as operations execute.
  • Remote-friendly gameplay: Navigate choices and interact using directional controls and the Select button.
  • Instant feedback: See whether an answer is correct and understand the reasoning behind it.
  • Progress and scoring: Track performance across challenge rounds.

How We Plan to Build It

The application is being developed using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript, with a focus on a responsive TV interface, readable typography, clear focus indicators, and keyboard/D-pad navigation.

The initial version will focus on a small set of carefully designed challenges rather than trying to implement every algorithm at once.

Challenges

One of the main challenges is designing an interface for a television rather than a laptop or phone. A TV app needs large, readable elements, predictable navigation, and interactions that work without a mouse or touchscreen.

Another challenge is presenting algorithmic concepts visually while keeping the underlying logic accurate and the gameplay simple enough for beginners.

What We Hope to Learn

Through this project, we aim to explore TV-first web development, remote-controlled interaction, and visual approaches to teaching computer science.

Algorithm Arena explores a simple idea: learning an algorithm should not stop at understanding the code. You should be able to predict it, interact with it, and see why it works.

Algorithm Arena: Think. Predict. Discover. | Development Update

I've completed the core gameplay for Algorithm Arena, an interactive learning game featuring Bubble Sort, Selection Sort, and Insertion Sort, with scoring and streak tracking.

I've published the website, uploaded the source code to GitHub, and tested the experience using an Android TV emulator to evaluate its TV-screen layout and controls.

I'm still seeking clarification regarding the approved Fire TV demo options, as I don't currently have access to a physical Fire TV device.

I'm continuing to refine the project and verify the submission requirements.
