Inspiration
AlgoPrep was inspired by the difficulties students face while preparing for Data Structures and Algorithms and coding interviews. Many learners use multiple platforms for learning concepts, finding problems, practicing code, and tracking their progress. We wanted to bring these activities together into one simple and structured platform.
Our goal was to create a student-friendly DSA preparation platform that makes learning and practicing algorithms more organized, interactive, and accessible.
What it does
AlgoPrep is a full-stack DSA preparation platform that helps students improve their problem-solving and coding skills.
Key features include:
- Structured DSA learning sheets and coding problems
- Interactive problem-solving interface
- Online code editor for practicing solutions
- User authentication and personalized accounts
- Progress tracking for learning and problem-solving
- Organized DSA topics for systematic preparation
- Code execution and submission through a judge system
The platform is designed to provide a complete workflow from learning a concept → solving problems → submitting code → tracking progress.
How we built it
AlgoPrep was built as a full-stack web application using modern web technologies.
Frontend
- Next.js – application framework and routing
- React – reusable and interactive UI components
- TypeScript – type-safe development
- Tailwind CSS – responsive and modern interface design
Backend
- Next.js API Routes – backend APIs and server-side functionality
- MongoDB – storing user and application data
- Mongoose – database modeling and interaction
- JWT – user authentication
- bcryptjs – secure password handling
Coding System
We developed a coding judge architecture that handles code submissions and evaluates solutions. JavaScript and TypeScript solutions can be executed through the application, while the architecture can also work with a Piston-compatible execution service for additional programming languages.
The application is organized into separate components for the UI, API routes, database models, authentication, and DSA content, making it easier to maintain and extend.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was connecting the frontend, backend, and database while keeping the application responsive and reliable.
Another major challenge was implementing the coding execution system. Running user-submitted code safely and handling different programming languages requires careful design.
We also faced challenges in:
- Designing a simple but useful DSA learning structure
- Managing user authentication and sessions
- Connecting MongoDB with the application
- Maintaining user progress
- Handling code submissions and execution results
- Creating a responsive interface for different screen sizes
- Organizing a large number of DSA problems in a user-friendly way
We solved these challenges by separating the application into modular components and testing each part independently before integrating the complete system.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building a complete DSA preparation platform rather than just a collection of coding questions.
Our key accomplishments include:
- Building a functional full-stack web application
- Creating an organized DSA preparation experience
- Implementing user authentication
- Integrating MongoDB for data management
- Developing an interactive coding environment
- Implementing a code submission and judging workflow
- Creating a scalable project structure
- Combining learning, coding practice, and progress tracking in one platform
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how to develop and connect different parts of a full-stack application.
We gained practical experience in:
- Next.js and React development
- TypeScript
- REST/API-based communication
- MongoDB and Mongoose
- Authentication and authorization
- Frontend and backend integration
- Code execution and judging systems
- Responsive UI development
- Git and GitHub-based project management
Most importantly, we learned how to turn an idea into a working software product by planning, developing, testing, debugging, and continuously improving it.
What's next for AlgoPrep DSA
We plan to continue improving AlgoPrep by adding more features for students and coding enthusiasts.
Future improvements include:
- More DSA problems and learning sheets
- Support for more programming languages
- Advanced progress analytics
- Difficulty-based problem recommendations
- Personalized learning paths
- Leaderboards and coding challenges
- AI-powered hints and explanations
- Improved code evaluation and feedback
- More interactive learning resources
Our long-term goal is to make AlgoPrep DSA a complete and intelligent platform for DSA learning, coding practice, and interview preparation.
