Inspiration

The inspiration for the Algebra Tutor app sprang from a desire to revolutionize the way algebra is taught and learned. Recognizing that students often find algebra challenging and disconnected from real life, we set out to create an app that would make algebra not only more accessible but also engaging and enjoyable. Our vision was to craft an educational experience that feels like an adventure, where each algebraic challenge is an opportunity for growth, and every achievement is a cause for celebration. We aimed to build an app that would serve as a bridge between abstract mathematical concepts and their practical applications, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of algebra among students from elementary to high school levels.

What it does

The Algebra Tutor app is a state-of-the-art educational platform that brings algebra to life for students. It personalizes learning by generating a custom list of algebra formulas based on the student's grade level, allowing them to either select from this list or input their own algebra questions. The app provides detailed explanations for each formula, helping students understand the underlying principles. It also offers real-world examples to demonstrate the relevance of algebra in everyday situations. To reinforce learning, the app generates practice questions and rewards students with motivational badges for correct answers, making the learning process interactive and rewarding.

How we built it

The Algebra Tutor app was built from the ground up using the Party Rock platform. We began by outlining the core functionalities we wanted the app to have, such as personalized formula lists, interactive student input, and real-world example generation. By entering these specifications into the platform, we were able to leverage Party Rock's capabilities to create an app that responds to student input with tailored content and learning experiences. The app's architecture was designed to be intuitive and user-friendly, ensuring that students could navigate and utilize its features with ease.

Challenges we ran into

During the development of the Algebra Tutor app using Party Rock, we encountered several challenges that tested our problem-solving skills and creativity:

Slow Response Times: One significant challenge was the slow response times experienced when detailed instructions were provided in prompts. This lag affected the fluidity of the user experience, hindering seamless interaction within the app

App Freezes: Another hurdle we faced was occasional app freezes when users attempted to navigate within the app while the LLM (Large Language Model) was generating output. These freezes disrupted the user experience and required optimization to ensure smooth functionality

Performance Issues with Widgets: Moving widgets or resizing them caused the app to slow down, impacting user interaction and responsiveness. This performance issue needed to be addressed to enhance the overall user experience

Limitations in Conditional Logics: The app faced constraints in implementing conditional logic within widgets, restricting the flexibility and functionality of certain interactive elements. Overcoming this limitation required innovative solutions to provide a more dynamic user experience.

Collaboration: Only one member of the team could able to edit the app at a time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are immensely proud of creating an app that transforms algebra learning into an engaging and interactive experience. Our ability to personalize the learning content based on the student's grade level and to provide real-world examples that make algebra relatable stands out as a significant achievement. The development of a system that rewards students with badges for their accomplishments has also been gratifying, as it encourages continued learning and celebrates student progress.

What we learned

What I found particularly impressive about PartyRock is its role as an educational tool for guiding users in building with generative AI and fostering an understanding of prompt engineering. The platform's accessibility is a standout feature, making generative AI development achievable for individuals with varying levels of expertise or access to the product. Getting started with PartyRock is remarkably straightforward, but the true magic lies in the platform's responsiveness to creative and precise instructions. The more detailed and imaginative your prompts are, the more exceptional the performance of PartyRock becomes, showcasing its potential to empower users in creating innovative and engaging generative AI applications.

What's next for Algebra Tutor

Looking ahead, we plan to expand the Algebra Tutor app's capabilities by incorporating more advanced features such as adjust the difficulty level based on the student's performance. Continuous improvement of the app's performance and user interface will remain a priority, as will the exploration of new ways to make algebra even more accessible and enjoyable for students worldwide.
