Inspiration

The inspiration behind Alga Health stems from a collective desire to address the growing global health challenges and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3—ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for everyone at all ages. Recognizing the critical role of nutrition in overall health, the team was inspired to develop a solution that empowers individuals to actively manage their well-being through personalized insights into their nutrient status.

What it does

Alga Health is a revolutionary health app designed to inform users about any nutrient deficiencies in their diets on the go. The app requires user inputs to analyze dietary habits, providing real-time insights into potential gaps in essential nutrients. By promoting awareness and education, Alga Health empowers users to make informed decisions about their nutrition, contributing to early recognition and prevention of diseases associated with nutrient deficiencies.

How we built it

Alga Health was developed using Android Studio, with XML for the front-end design and Java implemented for the back-end code.

Challenges we ran into

Due to time constraints, we were not able to implement the entire array of features we wished to include in Alga Health. These additional features include a more sophisticated model of determining nutrient deficiencies to accurately reflect real-world health issues. The next steps if a user is deemed to be moderately or severely deficient. This may include recommended foods to consume/decrease in their diet or doctor's visit suggestions. Furthermore, we were

What we learned

We were able to explore various different technologies to implement within the app, such as Google APIs, while learning about different front-end and back-end languages like React, Django. In future projects, we hope to utilize these features to improve our designs and applications.

What's next for Alga Health

In order to improve Alga Health, many changes would have to be implemented. Particularly in regards to the sophistication and accuracy of the app. This may include implementing AI models to learn from existing health records to determine potential areas of concern for users. As we grow and learn as software developers, we hope to create an application that accurately reflects our skills as developers.
