Inspiration

Traditional fitness apps assume fully able bodied users but 75% of people with physical disabilities do not get enough exercise. As a consequence. they are 1.7x more likely to be medically obese. Thus, we wanted to help reduce the barriers to exercise for people with disabilities through making an accessible fitness app.

What it does

Our fitness app Alfa, personalises workouts to each individual who have unique needs. This is done by an onboarding process that creates the user profile based on the user's limits, equipment and energy. Then, the workout is generated based on our diverse exercise library. Some exercises come with the option to camera track the user which counts their reps and makes the workout hands free. Furthermore, there is the option to use voice navigation where the user can say commands that can alter their workout, making the process seamless.

Other features include a post summary workout page of meaningful statistics, progress tab, and settings that provide extra accessibility features for an inclusive user experience.

How we built it

We used Next.js for full stack Styling comes from Tailwind and Radix. Anthropic API was used to generate personalised workouts. MediaPipe pose detection was used for camera based tracking. Web Speech API for the voice control

Challenges we ran into

A challenge was making sure our camera tracking for the upper body was accurate for rep counting. Another was in designing the web layout and frontend to be accessibility friendly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Since we built this for a hackathon, we are most proud of the fact that we were ambitious enough to implement many significant features to demo them in such a short time.

What we learned

We learnt that accessibility should be a conscious choice whenever you implement a design!

What's next for Alfa

To thoroughly test our features to improve our camera tracking and voice navigation technology. Adding more exercises to our exercise library. Cater to more different types of physical disabilities. Authentication for register and login.
