Inspiration
Team of four got together at HackAZ and we were given two days to create any type of project we wish to build. We saw that we were able to get a hands on Amazon Alexa and decided to use Alexa for our project.
What it does
This project mainly targeted young children who are in early elementary school that needs help on spelling tests at home. When we say "Alexa, Vocabulary tutor", it will prompt into Vocabulary section. Then it will ask us if we want to make flashcards, spell the words in the flashcards, and/or say the words in the flashcards.
How I built it
We used Alexa Developer Console to create the frontend part of Alexa Program. Alexa Developer Console allows users to create a program where Alexa understands the user's verbal command and prompt into the section that user command. We used Alexa Developer Console to do this: "Alexa, Vocabulary tutor", then Alexa will say "Welcome to Vocabulary Tutor. You can ask me to make Flashcards, teach you how to spell, or be quizzed on your Flashcards. How can I help?" Then making the flashcards, spelling how words and/or saying the words in the flashcards, we used backend - javascript - to build it.
Challenges I ran into
The Challenges we ran into is that not all the teammates contributed to the project, we didn't have enough time to complete the project and using javascript to create the backend was the most difficult part of this project. No one in the team knew how to use javascript as well, only the basic, and some team members didn't try to help or contribute.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The accomplishments that I'm proud of is that I came up with using Alexa to make vocabulary tutor section and I was able to do the frontend, Alexa Developer Console, all by myself. Due to lack of my team members' support. Although we weren't able to complete the project with working result, one of my team member and I tried to use javascript to try to code the backend part of the project. In my opinion, attempting the backend with not a lot of knowledge with javascript, was a great accomplishment that I'm also proud of
What I learned
I learned that in Hackathon, it is important to choose a right members, although I tried my best to lead my team, it was just difficult to lead people who weren't interested. Next time in Hackathon, I will team up with people I know, and for next Hackathon like this, I will try to make a project with the computer language my team members and I am confident with.
What's next for Alexa_Flashcards
If I had more time and possibly better team members, I really want to get this project completed and get it working
