ALEXA+
Inspiration
We wanted to build a personal AI assistant that makes everyday computer interactions easier, faster, and more natural. Inspired by the vision of Amazon Alexa+, we aimed to create an intelligent assistant that understands user requests and performs useful actions.
What it does
ALEXA+ is a self-hosted personal AI assistant that supports both text and voice interactions. It answers questions, performs calculations, searches websites, manages meetings and reminders, and provides spoken responses. It also supports persistent scheduling and calendar export.
How we built it
We built ALEXA+ using Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The backend handles user requests, AI integration through the Groq API, scheduling, and local database operations using SQLite. Browser speech recognition and speech synthesis enable voice interaction. Wikipedia provides additional information when needed.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating voice recognition with the backend, handling natural-language commands, parsing dates and times accurately, maintaining persistent reminders, and ensuring secure communication between the frontend and backend were some of our major challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully developed a functional personal assistant combining AI-powered conversations, voice interaction, website searching, calculations, and persistent meeting and reminder management in one application. We are particularly proud of making it self-hosted and keeping API credentials on the backend.
What we learned
We gained practical experience in Python backend development, frontend-backend integration, AI API integration, browser speech technologies, SQLite database management, natural-language processing, and application security.
What's next for ALEXA+
We plan to improve conversational intelligence, add better contextual memory, introduce more advanced voice capabilities, support additional integrations, enhance task automation, and develop a more personalized assistant experience.
