CUMTD Skill for Amazon Alexa
On the UIUC Campus, the Transit apps which display the bus schedule information around town are a mainstay of every phone. For students with Amazon Echo devices, this skill will allow access to the scheduling information via Alexa as well.
This project uses an AWS Lambda function written in python that makes use of the CUMTD API to obtain information about upcoming buses at a given stop.
Since the skill isn't officially available on the Alexa Marketplace yet (coming soon), some sample queries are included below.
Alexa, ask Transit when the 100 gets to 4th and Armory
The 100N Yellow is expected at 4th and Armory in 22 minutes
Alexa, ask Transit what buses are coming to the Transit Plaza
At the Transit Plaza, the 130S Silver Limited is expected in 1 minutes, the 130N Silver Limited is expected in 3 minutes, the 100S Yellow is expected in 11 minutes, the 220S Illini Limited is expected in 14 minutes, the 220N Illini Limited is expected in 16 minutes, the 130S Silver Limited is expected in 21 minutes, the 130N Silver Limited is expected in 23 minutes, and the 100N Yellow is expected in 26 minutes."
Admittedly, this project was a peculiar choice for a hackathon in Arizona, but I chose to do it anyway because it will be of substantial personal use to me during the next semester.
