Inspiration
We wanted to bridge the gap between traditional voice assistants and modern context-driven AI by leveraging the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to make smart devices truly context-aware and modular.
What it does
Alexa+ acts as an advanced Model Context Protocol server integrated with Flask API endpoints, enabling seamless context sharing, tool orchestration, and intelligent request handling.
How we built it
We developed the backend using Python, Flask, and SQLite/Turso, integrating the Model Context Protocol for JSON-RPC communication, containerizing components with Docker, and setting up structured tool routing.
Challenges we ran into
Configuring robust JSON-RPC handling, managing dynamic environment variables ('dotenv'), and securely bridging the MCP endpoints with Flask required precise debugging and route restructuring.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully implementing an end-to-end MCP server architecture in Python that connects external AI clients to custom backend tools and database schemas.
What we learned
Gained deep insights into the Model Context Protocol, asynchronous Python request management, and building extensible API architectures for next-gen voice assistants.
What's next for Alexa-plus
Adding support for more custom tools, expanding database integrations, and enhancing real-time multi-client synchronization.
