StudyMate — A Study Companion for Every Student
Inspiration
As students, we know how difficult it can be to manage assignments, prepare for exams, and finish everything on time. Sometimes, we make a study plan but fail to follow it because of unexpected things or a lack of time. Then we feel stressed about all the work left to do.
We wanted to build something that could help students deal with these everyday problems. That's how we came up with StudyMate.
Our idea was simple: create a place where students can organize their tasks, plan their studies, keep track of exams, and get back on track when things don't go as planned. We wanted to make studying feel more organized and less stressful.
What It Does
StudyMate brings different study-planning features together in one application.
- Task Management: Helps students organize academic tasks and track pending work.
- Study Plans: Helps students organize study activities and priorities.
- Exam Tracking: Helps students keep track of upcoming exams and deadlines.
- Study Recovery: Helps students review their plans when they miss a study session.
- Study Assistant: Provides an interface for study-related interactions.
- MCP Integration: Includes an MCP server that exposes supported study-related tools to compatible clients.
The main idea behind StudyMate is that missing one study session shouldn't mean giving up on the whole plan. Students should be able to adjust their plans and continue working toward their goals.
How We Built It
We built StudyMate as a web application using Node.js, Express, JavaScript, and local JSON storage.
We created different sections for tasks, study plans, exams, recovery, and the dashboard so students can access their study-related information in one place.
For the Alexa+ hackathon track, we also explored Model Context Protocol (MCP) and built an MCP server using Streamable HTTP. This allows compatible clients to access the study operations exposed by our application.
Building this project gave us an opportunity to learn new technologies and apply them to a problem we understand as students.
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was bringing all the features together into one application. We had to think about how tasks, exams, and study plans could work together instead of feeling like separate tools.
Understanding MCP and how its server communicates with compatible clients was another learning experience. We had to understand how the different parts fit together.
We also had limited time during the hackathon. We had more ideas than we could implement, so we focused on the main features and identified what still needed improvement.
These challenges taught us that building a project takes more than a good idea. It requires patience, problem-solving, and a willingness to learn from mistakes.
Accomplishments We're Proud Of
We are proud that we took an everyday problem faced by students and turned it into a project we could build and demonstrate.
- We brought several study-planning features into one application.
- We explored MCP and built a server that exposes supported study operations to compatible clients.
- We gained practical experience working with backend technologies.
- We challenged ourselves to learn something new and turn our idea into reality.
For us, this project is more than just a hackathon submission. It is a step forward in our learning journey and proof that we can start with a simple idea and work toward building something useful.
What We Learned
While building StudyMate, we learned more about backend development, organizing application features, managing data, and working with MCP.
We also learned that having an idea is only the beginning. Making it useful requires testing, fixing problems, listening to feedback, and improving the experience.
Most importantly, we realized that we don't need to know everything before starting a project. We can learn along the way, make mistakes, and gradually build something better.
What's Next for Alexa+?
We want to continue improving StudyMate and explore how it could work more naturally with Alexa+.
In the future, we hope to support more conversational study interactions, allowing students to check their tasks, ask about upcoming exams, and review their study plans through supported Alexa+ integrations.
We also want to improve the reliability of the application, make study recovery more useful, and explore personalized study recommendations.
These are future goals that we hope to work toward as we continue learning and developing the project.
Our Vision
We know that student life isn't always easy. There are days when everything goes according to plan and days when nothing does.
We wanted StudyMate to be a small step toward making those difficult days easier to manage.
Our goal isn't to help students become perfect at following schedules. It's to help them stay organized, adjust when things go wrong, and keep moving forward.
Because one bad study day shouldn't decide a student's future.
StudyMate — Plan your studies, get back on track, and keep going.
Mathematical Foundation (Future Enhancement)
StudyMate could eventually use simple mathematical models to help students organize their time and track progress.
For example, study completion could be represented as:
$$ P = \frac{T_c}{T_t} \times 100\% $$
where:
- $P$ = percentage of tasks completed
- $T_c$ = number of completed tasks
- $T_t$ = total number of tasks
Available study time could also be estimated as:
$$ T_a = T_f - T_b $$
where:
- $T_a$ = available study time
- $T_f$ = free time available
- $T_b$ = time reserved for breaks and other commitments
These formulas are illustrative ideas for future enhancements, not claims that the current application implements these calculations.
