Inspiration

Software engineers spend up to 40% of their workday context-switching between code editors, browser tabs, GitHub PRs, task boards, and calendars. Simply finding out:

  • "What's my status today?"
  • "Are there any urgent PRs blocking my team?"
  • "What should I focus on next?"

typically requires opening multiple tabs, reading through notification feeds, and performing mental arithmetic to decide what matters most.

We set out to turn Alexa+ into an ambient engineering copilot. By connecting Alexa+ to developer workflows through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), engineers can receive hands-free, intelligent audio briefings and task recommendations without ever breaking their flow state or touching a keyboard.

What it does

Alexa+ Developer MCP is a self-hosted Model Context Protocol server that bridges voice assistants and LLMs with developer tooling over Streamable HTTP (SSE) transport.

It provides four specialized tools:

  1. get_daily_summary: Generates a natural conversational morning briefing that synthesizes open PRs, urgent tasks, and schedule commitments.
  2. get_open_prs: Surfaces review blockers, failing CI checks, and merge-ready PRs across repositories.
  3. get_pending_tasks: Fetches and prioritizes engineering deliverables and sprint milestones.
  4. suggest_next_action: Uses Amazon Bedrock (Claude 3) to analyze cross-domain context and recommend the single highest-impact next step (e.g., unblocking a teammate vs. deep-work coding).

Every tool produces dual output:

  • Natural speech optimized for Alexa+'s voice synthesizer (concise, clear, under 3 sentences).
  • Structured JSON metadata with visual cards for screen devices (Echo Show, Fire TV, or desktop dashboards).

How we built it

  • MCP Protocol Engine: Implemented on @modelcontextprotocol/sdk supporting Streamable HTTP/SSE (/sse and /messages) and direct JSON-RPC (/mcp).
  • AI Intelligence with Amazon Bedrock: Integrated @aws-sdk/client-bedrock-runtime using Anthropic Claude 3 (Haiku / Sonnet) for cross-domain context synthesis and intelligent action recommendation.
  • Node.js & Express Architecture: Built a lightweight, modular server with dedicated tool handlers and schema validation.
  • Dual-Mode Resilient Fallback: Implemented an automated heuristic synthesis fallback so the entire server and demo remain 100% functional out-of-the-box, even without active AWS API keys.
  • Interactive Web Simulator: Built an in-browser studio with Web Speech API audio synthesis and real-time protocol telemetry (http://localhost:3333) allowing anyone to test without physical Alexa hardware.

Challenges we ran into

  • Voice-First LLM Calibration: Standard LLM outputs are lengthy and formatted in markdown. We had to carefully craft prompts and response schemas so Bedrock generates punchy, natural speech strings for audio playback while simultaneously preserving structured metadata for screens.
  • Streamable HTTP & SSE Compliance: Handling stateful Server-Sent Events (SSE) connections and bi-directional message routing according to the latest Model Context Protocol specification.
  • Zero-Friction Testing: Ensuring judges and evaluators can experience the full voice and AI capabilities seamlessly without mandatory cloud configuration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a fully compliant, self-hosted MCP server with 100% automated test coverage across all tool handlers (npm test).
  • Achieved sub-second response times for ambient voice queries over SSE transport.
  • Created an interactive, browser-based simulator with voice audio playback and real-time protocol inspection.
  • Successfully fused Amazon Bedrock's generative intelligence with ambient voice developer workflows.

What we learned

  • How to design and implement custom tools using the Model Context Protocol over Streamable HTTP.
  • Best practices for voice-first agentic UX, where spoken brevity is just as important as underlying structured data.
  • Strategies for orchestrating Amazon Bedrock runtime calls alongside graceful heuristic fallbacks for high reliability.

What's next for Alexa+ Developer MCP: Ambient Voice Intelligence for Devs

  • IDE Integrations: Bringing direct MCP client connections into VS Code and Cursor for background context sync.
  • Live Webhooks: Adding automated push notifications for GitHub PR reviews and CI test completions to trigger ambient Alexa voice chimes.
  • Alexa Skill Store Deployment: Packaging an official Alexa Custom Skill adapter for plug-and-play installation on physical Echo and Echo Show devices.
  • Multi-Source Integrations: Expanding tool coverage to Jira, Linear, Slack, and Google Calendar integrations.
