Inspiration
Managing household finances can be challenging when expenses, bill due dates, and savings goals need to be tracked separately. We wanted to explore how conversational AI could make these everyday tasks simpler and more accessible.
This inspired us to build Alexa BudgetMate, an Alexa+-style budget assistant that allows users to manage household expenses and bills through natural-language conversations rather than navigating multiple screens.
What it does
Alexa BudgetMate helps users manage everyday household finances through a conversational interface.
- Expense tracking: Add household expenses and keep track of spending.
- Spending summaries: Review expenses and understand where money is going.
- Bill management: Add bills, check upcoming due dates, and mark bills as paid.
- Savings suggestions: Get practical suggestions for managing household spending.
- Conversational experience: Enter requests in natural language through a simple web interface.
- MCP tool integration: Connect user requests to specific actions through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
The goal is to make financial management more convenient by turning everyday requests into actionable tasks.
How we built it
We built Alexa BudgetMate using Python for the backend and a web-based interface for user interaction.
The application uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to expose household-finance functions as tools. These include adding expenses, generating spending summaries, adding bills, checking upcoming bills, marking bills as paid, and providing savings suggestions.
The web application provides the conversational interface, while the backend handles the application logic and tool execution.
We focused on connecting these components into a clear workflow that demonstrates how AI applications can move beyond answering questions and support practical, task-oriented interactions.
Challenges we ran into
One of our main challenges was integrating the MCP server with the web application and ensuring that requests reached the correct tools.
Configuring compatible dependencies and setting up the local Python environment also required attention. We had to troubleshoot command-line errors and manage SDK versions to keep the application compatible.
These challenges helped us understand the importance of testing each component, managing dependencies carefully, and validating the complete workflow instead of testing individual components in isolation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building a project that applies conversational AI and MCP to a practical, everyday problem.
Our key accomplishments include:
- Developing a dedicated MCP server for household-finance actions.
- Organizing expense and bill-management functionality into reusable tools.
- Connecting backend functionality to a conversational web interface.
- Creating a project that demonstrates how natural-language requests can map to concrete application actions.
- Exploring an architecture that can be extended with additional capabilities in the future.
Most importantly, this project helped us turn an idea into a practical application while learning technologies relevant to modern AI-powered software development.
What we learned
Through this project, we gained practical experience with Python backend development, MCP tool integration, dependency management, and conversational user-interface design.
We learned that building an AI-powered application involves more than generating responses. The application must connect user requests to the appropriate tools, execute actions correctly, and communicate the results clearly.
We also learned the importance of keeping the architecture modular, testing integrations, and designing around real user needs.
What's next for Alexa BudgetMate
We envision evolving Alexa BudgetMate into a more personalized and reliable household-finance assistant.
Our future plans include:
- Persistent storage: Securely retain expenses and bills across sessions.
- Voice interaction: Explore voice input for a more natural, hands-free experience.
- Smarter insights: Identify spending patterns and provide personalized savings suggestions.
- Bill reminders: Help users stay aware of upcoming payment deadlines.
- Improved privacy and security: Protect financial information through appropriate security controls.
- Expanded integrations: Explore Amazon Bedrock and additional assistant integrations where supported.
Our long-term goal is to make household financial management simpler through conversational AI, actionable tools, and a user experience designed around everyday needs.
