Inspiration

I'm inspired (and in some ways concerned) by the power of generative AI. As a storyteller, I'm excited about a world of opportunities to tell new and exciting stories that would have been impossible to tell without millions of dollars in financial support.

On the other side, as a filmmaker who pays his bills being on set, it scares me in how it might negatively impact those who make a living as traditional filmmakers. My hope is that this project will inspire conversation and debate about these new tools and perhaps the blessing or curse they may bring.

What it does

How we built it

I generated this film, first by creating a frame by frame storyboard using Gemini's Nano Banana. After creating every still, I used Veo 3 and Kling 2.5 to turn the stills in to motion picture. I used Eleven Labs for sound FX and some off-screen dialogue and then used Suno to generate musical score. Finally, the project was edited and exported using Adobe Premiere Pro.

Challenges we ran into

Character consistency is always the hardest part of filmmaking with generative AI. Although Nano Banana is a huge improvement, you can still notice that the characters appearance drifts throughout. Also, getting good performances from the AI character was difficult and tedious, often requiring clever cutting and sometimes, changing the idea all together to get something that works.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud that this shows a more traditional style of filmmaking, using AI. I find that most AI filmmakers tend to use VO narration and vignette style storytelling which is much easier to accomplish with AI. I wanted to try something hard for AI, and I believe it was fairly successful.

What we learned

Although tedious and frustrating at times, AI is a very powerful tool in the filmmaking workspace and should prove to be a power tool to augment traditional filmmaking. I don't think it will ever replace real actors and filmmakers, but should be applied to films and the craft going forward.
