Inspiration
Our mission is to prioritize patient well-being based on pharmaceutical drugs. Most prescriptions have many terms and ingredients that are often hard to understand without ten years of a medical degree. Aletheia is an app that takes those prescriptions and records and presents them to the user in more understandable words.
What it does
It uses AI to scan medical documents and check if prescribed medications are genuinely beneficial for patients. The user can upload a pdf and images of their medical records and prescriptions. Then, the AI scans the uploaded documents, in addition to medical research documents, to get the most information about how each drug affects the patient.
How we built it
React frontend, React Native for mobile app, and a Node.js backend.
Challenges we ran into
Time crunch, using and learning different libraries, managing versions between contributors. We were pressed for time, so there were a lot of aspects of the app we could not polish or add. We also used and learned many different libraries that we never used before. Another challenge was staying consistent with the types of components we wanted to add to the app. As for version control, we had to coordinate pushing versions of the project to our repository.
We had to work with new file upload systems with Multer and figuring out API discrepancies. We worked through the challenges of implementing a RetrievalQA system that had to query over medical databases.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Working with cutting edge AI technology. Overcoming hurdles. Learning. Meeting each other and building a network. We are proud of implementing cutting edge AI technology by making our own API's or using API's from third parties. Using API's and connecting frontend to backend was one of the biggest challenges we faced, but we were able to connect all parts of the project in the end. Successfully utilizing new libraries and skills, such as mobile development and certain third party API's was also achievement.
What we learned
Learning the intricacies of full stack development, backend work, creating APIs and using third party APIs. Version control as well.
What's next for Aletheia
We are thinking of adding more links to our dashboard, where the user can access their history and user settings. A password reset function can be added to the authentication part of the project, where the user can change their password if they forget. An interactive chatbot can also be implemented in the future with similar machine learning methods. The UI and page designs will also be improved so they can be more accessible.
