Inspiration

Social isolation in older adults is affecting a significant number of people worldwide by putting them at a risk for dementia and other serious medical conditions. The best way to prevent social isolation is to socialize with people, friends, and family. Another global issue in our world is deforestation. It has a negative impact on climate change and global warming. In fact, 3.5-7 billion trees are cut down each year.

What it does

The app Alder Tree will be a platform where senior adults can connect and socialize with each other. Users can edit their profiles and write a bio about their interests, passions, and hobbies. Users can connect by directly messaging and looking at their posts. Users can post anything interesting: a new cooking recipe, a recent book they have been reading, something they learned, a fun memory, a story, a hobby, etc. The interaction and exchange of ideas could motivate senior adults to try something new or to practice a hobby they haven’t done in a while. Along with helping senior adults try new things, the app will also help the global environment. The environment is now negatively impacted by pollution and deforestation. To help the environment, the more the user interacts with the app, the more trees will be planted (afforestation). The app gets profits and income from advertisements. Through the app, senior adults can help and contribute to the world while they learn and socialize with each other (prevent social isolation).

How we built it

Figma Prototype

Challenges we ran into

Making the App senior friendly The app will consist of big text and clear images to prevent complexity. Less text on the screen and detailed directions on how the app works.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I know there are a lot of apps that connect users and have a reminders feature, but most of these apps are not senior-friendly. Alder Trees is developed with the needs of senior adults in mind. Also from my personal experience, I know and met a lot of senior adults who reminisce about their childhood and how they spent a lot of time living and making the most of what nature has to offer. Now, senior adults can make a change and a positive impact on the environment while improving themselves.

What we learned

When coming up with ideas you don't necessarily have to come up with the most complex problems. Just think about common problems in the world and try to work a working solution.

What's next for Alder trees

implement clicks on advertisements to gain money to plant the trees.
