Inspiration 🤩
We were heavily inspired by the 'Popular Times' feature on Google Maps and wanted to adapt this to work in university campuses. We also wanted to implement a search engine like the Lost on Campus app, where study spaces are categorised and filtered by the amenities available.
What it does 👀
Alcove is a website for university students that takes the hassle out of finding the perfect study spot. Using community input, Alcove gathers data on noise levels and crowdedness in various study spaces around the campus. Users can then view all the available study spaces by building. When a space is selected, Alcove displays its characteristics such as opening hours, amenities, noise and crowdedness, saving students time and energy walking from building to building searching for an empty seat.
How we built it 💡
We decided that a website would be the most feasible and appropriate platform. Using python, we parsed our data then, we implemented data visualisation with Dash presenting information through maps, graphs and icons. We ideated using the double diamond design thinking method, converging into an idea that we all can relate to.
Challenges we ran into ⌛️
Our team's limited programming skillset led to many technical constraints. We decided to use Dash, since we were most comfortable with coding in Python and lacked experience with HTML and CSS. Time constraints limited our ability to implement data from community input. Thus, we decided to use dummy data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of 🥰
Everyone on the team showed commitment to the project and we collaborated well to develop an effective and successful solution. The problem we chose was something we can easily relate to and find relevant in our daily lives. We are satisfied with our project and we're believe the solution we have created adequately addressed our identified problem.
What we learned 📚
Through this hackathon, we have learned the significance of time management and creating realistic goals and expectations. Creating an idea that is thought-through and planned out is essential in ensuring efficient project development.
What's next for Alcove 💚
Our next objective would be to implement the community input so that Alcove can provide accurate information. We’ve also looked into future implementation of alcove on a major scale. Most importantly, we thought the implementation of Alcove into a mobile app would be most useful as it would allow users to look at Alcove on the go, filter location to get specific location based on needs and wants, viewing nearby amenities and a centralised room booking system across universities to streamline the process.
