๐ฟ Inspiration
The main inspiration came from my love of gardening and growing stuff ๐ป. Last year I came across The Herbal Alchemist's Handbook and was surprised by how magical the book was ๐. It is a must have book for anyone that has a garden. Easy to grow herbs and plants offering alternatives cures that have been passed down for centuries ๐งช. I Also always loved logic games and the idea spawned as a loosely RPG game with a progression element ๐ฎ. I wanted to stay away from clicker games and focus on a game where the player needs to use their brain on how to progress and become a Legend! ๐
๐งโโ๏ธ What it does:
Alchemy Wizard Legends is a social management RPG where players act as a village Alchemist. Players must:
- Solve Riddles: Read cryptic requests from procedurally generated customers to figure out which of the 60 unique potions they need ๐งฉ.
- Master Brewing: Use a 3x3 Minecraft-style crafting grid to combine ingredients based on the alchemist cookbook โ๏ธ.
- Progress: Climb through levels of mastery, upgrading workshop apparatus (Cauldron, Furnace and Beaker) and collecting Wizard attire (Hats, Robes) to boost efficiency ๐.
- Author Missions: Most importantly, players can find "Notes" that allow them to post their own riddles to the subreddit, earning rewards as other Redditors solve them ๐.
๐ ๏ธ How we built it
So old fashion notebook first! ๐ I always believe in the power of jotting notes down. They may not be greatly formulated but its great for just quickly planning information out, drawing out UIs and assets โ๏ธ. I have worked on UI.UX design but not worked as a developer. I am an architect by trade so have a good sense of logic and working things out so make good use of Google Studio AI for planning and resource dumping and then built with Cursor Ai ๐ค. The Art work is all drawn by me which proved an insane feat with hundreds of drawn assets overall ๐จ. I make use of sketches, scanned and then use vector for the interfaces and photoshop for the ingredients, potions, wardrobe and workshop items ๐ป.
๐ Challenges we ran into
Well straight up I am not a developer ๐ . So when the reddit devs say something I make use of a number of AI assistance to translate and interpret this mystical language ๐ฃ๏ธ. What I have learnt through this is perseverance and always ask even if makes you feel stupid. most people are incredibly helpful and amazingly I have also helped some developers myself through stuff I have learnt ๐ค. The other challenges are mostly on logic and understanding of different elements of game balance โ๏ธ. Its always important to put in quick fix mechanisms for these so in my apps i add modtools directly into the app so a moderator can easily respond and fix something ๐ก๏ธ. Its just knowing what those modtools should be sometimes.
โจ Accomplishments that I am proud of
- The Authoring System: Creating a loop where players become content creators. Seeing a player-authored riddle get solved by the community is incredibly satisfying ๐.
- The "Vibe": I feel I achieved a premium "Game Feel" and getting my artwork in and seeing it come to life is an amazing feeling ๐.
- Efficiency: is a journey not a destination - i remember someone saying this to me and I peach it often. Key things for me is usage of CSS and SVG where it maters; its much more lightweight than pngs but it speeds up load times so avoids frustrations for players โก.
๐ก What I learned
Where do I begin! Primarily to keep trying/always have a purpose and then work out how to do it ๐ - it might not be the obvious logical way so you need to try different things - if you see something similar test it out and reverse engineer to see if you have missed anything ๐ง .
๐ฎ What's next for Alchemy Wizard Legends
Ah ha! this is the most important bit... well you are Wizard! I mean who doesn't want to be a wizard, right? ๐งโโ๏ธ So i really want to get stuck in to build some seasonal events which will include seasonal characters ๐๏ธ. I think this could be quite fun and have maybe different mini-tournaments in the process ๐. The lore part is super important to me and this is something I want to start building on now that the game is built out. Like where are the women in the village as this will be built around an event for female characters ๐ฉโ๐ฌ.
I am also currently working on pets and this will hopefully be included in early spring ๐พ. Wizard world potion - thinking a collaborative potion making where its on a global level - everyone needs to make specific potions and throw them into the abyss for a global event attires ๐. I would also like to build out the player more as the moment the wardrobe shows the attire but would love for this to be on the player also ๐.
Lastly some rare artefacts that can do various stuff - maybe instead of a character note a challenge where you challenge another wizard to a... potion-off โ๏ธ. I am also drafting up a good use for the wand so higher level wands will be able to make enchantments and exciting things to come with that โจ.
Happy Brewing! โ๏ธ๐ฅ
