Inspiration
Alcohol, while it can be fun at times, can also be a real problem! As college students, our team has seen the effects unsafe drinking everywhere on our respective campuses. Our schools did a great job informing us on how to drink safely, and most students know pacing the amount of drinks is a important for safety. This is reflected in the common habit of marking tallies on their arms, but that gives no consideration for the time at which the drinks were consumed. Keeping track of all these drinks and their time stamps are difficult to do in your head, so we made an app do it for us!
How we built it
The app was developed in Android Studio with Java and XML, and we used Google Cloud Firebase for our database.
Challenges we ran into & What we learned
This was the first time any of us used Google Firebase, so we ran into a lot of problems with setting up the virtual environment and also exchanging data with Firebase. After this hackathon, we feel much better about using Google Firebase as a database for projects. In addition, two of our members learned how to properly use git in terminal. We also learned essential debugging skills with Android StudioWe feel like the entire team learned a lot overall!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Although it seemed impossible at times on the way there, we have a functioning version! Treehacks 2020 = SUCCESS
Next step for Alc-Calc
We would like to extend the functionalities to enable customized entries of the type of drinks and volume and to incorporate well-researched math model of BAC calculation to yield a more accurate result. Also for the database entries, we would want to clear all of the user's data after a session ends for better future uses and privacy reasons!
