Inspiration

Every day, millions of students, professionals, founders, and creators face life-changing decisions. Whether it's choosing between higher studies and a job, starting a business, switching careers, or pursuing a passion, people often find themselves overwhelmed by information, conflicting advice, and uncertainty.

We realized that the real problem is not a lack of information. People have access to more information than ever before. The real challenge is decision paralysis — the inability to confidently move forward despite having access to countless resources.

This inspired us to build Alaya, an AI-powered decision intelligence system designed to help people understand why they are stuck and guide them toward meaningful action.

What it does

Alaya helps users navigate complex life and career decisions by analyzing their goals, priorities, concerns, and constraints.

Instead of simply generating answers, Alaya uncovers hidden decision blockers, identifies tradeoffs, highlights cognitive biases, and provides structured recommendations that help users move from confusion to clarity.

Users can describe a dilemma in natural language, and Alaya generates personalized decision insights along with actionable next steps.

Our goal is not to replace human decision-making but to improve it.

How we built it

Alaya uses an AI-powered decision intelligence pipeline.

The process begins when a user describes a dilemma in natural language.

The system then:

  1. Analyzes the user's input using Natural Language Processing (NLP).
  2. Extracts values, goals, concerns, and constraints.
  3. Performs tradeoff analysis between available options.
  4. Detects potential decision blockers and recurring patterns.
  5. Generates a structured decision report.
  6. Recommends actionable next steps.

The platform combines AI reasoning with a human-in-the-loop approach to ensure that final decisions remain under user control.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was designing a system that provides meaningful guidance without making decisions for users.

We had to carefully balance personalization and responsibility, ensuring that Alaya supports decision-making rather than replacing it.

Another challenge was translating subjective human concerns, fears, and uncertainties into structured insights that could be analyzed effectively by AI.

Additionally, creating clear and understandable outputs was essential, as users need transparency and trust when interacting with AI systems.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of building a system that focuses on reasoning rather than simply generating answers.

Unlike traditional recommendation systems, Alaya helps users uncover hidden blockers, understand tradeoffs, and gain clarity about their choices.

We successfully transformed a complex and highly personal problem into an AI-assisted experience that empowers users instead of replacing human judgment.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned that the most difficult problems are often not technical but human.

Decision-making is influenced by emotions, uncertainty, personal values, and cognitive biases.

We also learned the importance of Responsible AI practices, transparency, and human oversight when building systems that influence important life decisions.
