Inspiration
Having seen my mother, who completed a B.A. in L.L.B at the age of 37 and the difficulties she faced in getting back to study and work as a mother made me realise of the bigger problem, "The BREAK breaks the confidence". "Back to Work" comes from Elon Musk's famous tweet. The name ALARm is derived from the initials of my team - Anuj, Liza, Aditya and Rajat (me).
What it does
PROFILE RECOMMENDER
Everyone on the platform has two attributes to their profile - I know: "xyz", I aspire to learn: "abc". These attributes are used by our recommender while recommending profiles to a user. If I'm a woman trying to RESTART my career as a SDE, I'll need to learn technologies that have been introduced recently. I can search profiles in two ways - I can search for a mentor (one who has learnt it already) and I can look for a peer (one who is learning it as well). Since the platform consists of women who have/are trying to return to work after a break, they share a similar background which makes sharing of experiences easier.
EVENTS
This microsite is managed by the admins, solely focussing on informative sessions by women leaders. The sessions cover a wide range of categories, right from the speaker's personal journey to discussing new advancements and how more girls can be empowered to join STEM fields.
JOB HUNT
There are several programs solely aimed at hiring women returning from break. Due to information assymetry a lot of women are unaware and hence miss the opportunity of relaunching their career. ALARm gives all the information at a single place making it easier to access and navigate through.
Warrior Stories
Who can guide better than a woman who has been through the same struggles! This section consists of blogs by women who challenged adversities and broke the "break" stereotype!
How I built it
I used Google OAuth for building the registering and login system. The Django SQL queries were used to add users to the user table. I built the front end in Angular using Bootstrap. The "Events" and "Jobs" were scraped from google using BeautifulSoup and Selenium.
Challenges I ran into
One of my teammates, lost his internet connection for the past 3 days, which made it difficult for us to collaborate. Unfortunately, on the last day, another one went down due to illness. This left only 2 of us, and given the limited time, it was a challenge to completing ALARm. Unfortunately, using the Google Maps API part for finding nearest peer/mentor couldn't be completed.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
This was the first time I used Google OAuth (GCS) for login system. Being my very first hack, collaborating with a team was a fun and learning experience, although the team-mates faced some unforeseeable issues!
What I learned
Learnt to do web-scraping, use Google-OAuth and how to work with a team!
