Inspiration

Half of chronic disease patients don't take their meds correctly, causing 200,000 preventable deaths and €125B in costs across Europe yearly. The problem isn't willfulness, it's friction. We thought: why not solve this right inside Alan?

What it does

Snap a photo of any prescription. Mistral AI digitizes it instantly, even handwritten ones, and builds a daily reminder schedule. It cross-checks medications for dangerous interactions and rewards adherence with a gamified streak system.

How we built it

We integrated Alan Med directly into the Alan app. Mistral AI powers the prescription OCR, extracting medication names, dosages, and frequencies from unstructured documents. A safety layer flags drug interactions in real time.

Challenges we ran into

Doctors' handwriting was the biggest hurdle. Getting reliable extraction required careful prompt engineering on top of Mistral's OCR. We also wrestled with how to present safety alerts without causing unnecessary panic.

What we learned

AI OCR has come far, but the last 10% of accuracy on messy real-world documents is where all the work lives. Embedding a health tool inside an app people already trust beats asking them to download another standalone app.
