Inspiration
I was inspired after seeing millions of Americans line up for food banks during the COVID-19 recession and the increasing rise of obesity and food-related diseases that lines racial barriers.
What it does
This website seeks to raise awareness and help food desert/food bank organizations in Alabama gain outreach for clients and people in need. It also showcases a comprehensive report on the current situation of food deserts in the US and how many people are affected.
How we built it
I built this website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
Research for data collection/visualization has been hard to come across, and this was my first HTML project, so I had to self-teach myself languages.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of the data visualization I've conducted on the map and the previous award I received for this website.
What we learned
I learned that food deserts in the state of Alabama are widespread due to the lack of investment in food and wealth distribution, and I learned new languages (CSS, JavaScript) that will help me in future projects.
What's next for Alabama Food Deserts Project
I plan to integrate ML via Python for a prediction tool that predicts counties of their proneness to food desert status and food insecurity.
