About the Project

Inspiration

The inspiration for this project stemmed from witnessing the persistent healthcare challenges in rural and semi-urban India, the lack of timely health information, inaccessible vaccination schedules, and insufficient outbreak alerts. We believed that by leveraging the power of AI and conversational interfaces, we could bridge the healthcare information gap and empower marginalized communities with essential knowledge, all in their native languages.

What It Does

Our AI-driven multilingual healthcare chatbot provides preventive healthcare education, real-time vaccination updates, and outbreak alerts, accessible through WhatsApp and SMS. It guides users about disease symptoms, vaccination schedules following government norms, and emergency contacts, enabling health literacy and timely medical interventions across underserved regions.

How We Built It

We built the chatbot using the Gemini API and integrated government health APIs, including CoWIN for vaccination status and IDSP for disease outbreak data. The system provides multilingual support via pre-trained Indian-language models and Google Translate APIs. For deployment, we integrated with WhatsApp Cloud API to provide seamless user access through a familiar interface.

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Integrating diverse government APIs with varying access protocols and documentation.
  • Achieving high accuracy in symptom interpretation across multiple Indian languages and dialects.
  • Ensuring chatbot responsiveness and accessibility on low-bandwidth networks common in rural areas.
  • Navigating complexities of WhatsApp Business API access and message template approvals.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Developed a fully functional multilingual chatbot with a smooth, intuitive WhatsApp interface.
  • Integrated real-time government APIs for vaccination and outbreak alerts, ensuring trustworthy data.
  • Achieved comprehensive coverage of major preventive healthcare topics tailored to rural populations.
  • Delivered a cost-effective, scalable system designed for ease of deployment and user adoption.

What We Learned

  • The importance of culturally sensitive communication in healthcare AI solutions.
  • Handling multi-turn, multilingual conversations requires careful intent design and testing.
  • Government data APIs can be invaluable but often require persistent effort to access and integrate.
  • Cloud-hosted messaging platforms like WhatsApp Cloud API significantly speed up deployment.

What's Next for AI-Driven Public Health Chatbot for Disease Awareness

  • Expanding language coverage to include more regional dialects and minority languages.
  • Incorporating voice-enabled interaction for users with limited literacy.
  • Building predictive analytics to forecast outbreak risks using historical data.
  • Integrating telemedicine appointment booking and follow-up management.
  • Enhancing user engagement with gamification and community health challenges.
