Inspiration

AksiSigap is a website designed to give everyone easy access to emergency hotlines.

As a developing nation with a rapidly growing population, more and more people are prone to getting into emergencies. However, a staggering 72% of the Indonesian general population are unaware of the nation’s commonly-used emergency hotlines. This poses a massive safety risk for the general population, who could require emergency services at any moment’s notice.

What it does

AksiSigap is here to help! With the press of a button, the website can direct calls automatically to the service you need. By streamlining the process of calling emergency services, it provides a lifeline for people who may not be able to remember the emergency hotlines, and gives them a way to use them equally.

A comprehensive map of nearby hospitals, police stations, fire stations, and other similar social services are available to see within the website’s Maps screen. The website can even alert you of upcoming and ongoing nearby natural disasters, putting vigilance in the hands of the population.

Additionally, the website serves as an educational hub to ensure more common knowledge of emergency hotlines in Indonesia, closing the vast 72% information gap that is left by current systems and education.

How we built it

We used a React Vite framework for JavaScript to create a website that will load quickly even in the midst of an emergency. The backend runs on Python (Flask, specifically) to store recent alerts, safety guides, and more.

Challenges we ran into

Thinking of what to do for the Home UI and Maps section was challenging to say the least. We had to find ways to ensure that users of the website, at a glance, immediately know what they're looking at. That's easier said than done. The solution we ended up on happened to be a big red button, a common symbol for urgency and immediate consequence.

We also ran into several problems setting up the workspace for all of us, as one of us is used to developing in Linux environments while the others were more familiar with Windows. But compromises always have to be made during hackathons, and we're happy we were able to get it to work.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We managed to conceptualize and create a relatively robust and multifunctional plan for a website before time began dwindling, and stuck to that vision to the very end. The end result is a website that sticks true to what it was created for, and one that does everything it needs to do.

What we learned

We learned to work better as a team, delegating tasks between one another in a way that felt natural to all of us. We learned that our limits can be pushed quite far. We learned how to harness the tools at our disposal to create a functional website that has the potential to save lives.

What's next for AksiSigap

AksiSigap could use a few more tweaks to truly realize its goal, including a history tracking feature tied to your phone number. This would allow people to keep a track record of the times they’ve had to call an emergency service through the button.

Additionally, AksiSigap must go through several legal loopholes in order to become a true functioning website. Running it on the web and routing calls to emergency services can have its risks, and we want to ensure that this application is running fully legally and safely. In other words, we have to beraksi sigap.
