💡 Inspiration We noticed that students and professionals constantly switch between fragmented tools to get work done: WhatsApp for chat, Zoom for calls, Notion for tasks, and ChatGPT for help. This context switching kills productivity. We wanted to build a single, unified operating system for collaboration—one where your AI assistant lives inside your communication platform, aware of your team, your schedule, and your conversations.
🚀 What it does AIVA is a unified communication and productivity platform that combines:
Real-Time Messaging: Instant, low-latency chat with read receipts and online presence (like WhatsApp). Built-in AI Assistant (AIVA): A context-aware AI that can schedule meetings, draft professional emails, and break down tasks without leaving the chat interface. Video Conferencing: Integrated WebRTC video and audio calling. Role-Based Management: Secure authentication and organization management for institutions. ⚙️ How we built it We adopted a production-grade microservices architecture to ensure scalability:
Backend: NestJS (Node.js) for robust, modular services (Auth Service, User/Messaging Service). Frontend: React + Vite with Material UI for a clean, responsive "Glassmorphism" design. Real-Time: Socket.IO for bi-directional messaging and presence events. AI: Integrated OpenRouter (accessing Gemini Flash 2.0) with a custom Hybrid Fallback Engine that ensures the assistant works even if external APIs go down. Database: PostgreSQL for relational data (Users, Orgs) and message persistence. 🚧 Challenges we ran into AI API Reliability: We faced frequent rate limits and quota issues with public AI APIs. We solved this by building a "Robust Mode" fallback engine—if the main API fails, AIVA seamlessly switches to a local logic layer that can still handle critical tasks like scheduling and drafting, ensuring the demo never breaks. Real-Time State: Syncing "Online/Offline" status across multiple browser windows instantly was tricky. We implemented a custom WebSocket gateway with heartbeats to handle disconnections gracefully. 🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of Zero-Latency Messaging: We achieved instant message delivery that feels native and responsive. The "Unbreakable" Demo: Our hybrid AI system meant we could record our demo with 100% confidence, knowing the AI would always reply intelligently. Professional UI: We didn't just build a prototype; we pushed for a polished, "SaaS-ready" look with consistent typography, spacing, and interactive states. 🧠What we learned The power of Fallbacks: Always design for API failure. Our fallback system saved us multiple times during testing. State Management is King: Keeping frontend state (React Context) in sync with backend events (Socket.IO) requires rigorous discipline and optimistic UI updates. 🔮 What's next for AIVA Phase 3 (Calendar): Deep integration with Google Calendar for true 2-way sync. Phase 4 (Email Agent): AIVA will be able to read and reply to emails directly from the dashboard. Phase 5 (Mobile): Launching the React Native mobile app (architecture is already shared!).
