Inspiration

Photo editing usually depends heavily on a mouse, keyboard, or touchscreen. We wanted to explore a more natural way to interact with digital content: using our hands directly. This inspired AirTouch Studio Pro, a platform where creators can edit photos through hand gestures while also connecting with other creative professionals.

What it does

AirTouch Studio Pro is a camera-based photo editing and creative networking platform. The camera detects hand and finger movements and turns them into editing commands. Users can: Edit images using finger gestures Draw, liquify, erase, and adjust photos Switch editing tools with hand movements Undo and redo edits Move between different photos Use live chat to communicate and collaborate with other creators

How we built it

We combined computer vision, real-time hand tracking, gesture recognition, photo editing, and live communication. The camera tracks finger positions and movement patterns. We designed a simple gesture system where different finger combinations represent different actions: 1 finger → Editing and cursor control 2 fingers → Switch tools 3 fingers → Undo / Redo 4 fingers → Switch photos Pinch → Select, draw, or modify Open palm → Stop / Cancel These gestures are translated into commands that control the photo editor.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was gesture accuracy. Natural hand movements can be small and unpredictable, and similar gestures can easily be confused. For example, a three-finger swipe should trigger Undo, while a four-finger swipe should switch photos. We had to improve gesture timing, movement thresholds, stability, and cooldowns to reduce accidental actions. We also worked on making the controls responsive without making them too sensitive.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of building a working touchless editing experience that turns natural hand movements into useful photo-editing controls. We are also proud that AirTouch Studio Pro goes beyond editing by creating a place where photographers, designers, editors, and other creators can communicate and build professional connections.

What we learned

We learned that gesture-based interaction is not just about detecting fingers—it is about understanding user intention. Throughout the project, we gained experience with computer vision, gesture recognition, real-time interaction, photo editing, UI/UX design, debugging, and collaborative features. We also learned how important continuous testing and fine-tuning are when designing a new interaction system.

What's next for AirTouch Studio Pro

Next, we want to make gesture recognition even faster and more accurate, add more professional editing tools, and improve collaboration features. Our long-term goal is to turn AirTouch Studio Pro into a creative workspace where people can edit naturally, connect with other creators, collaborate, and create together.
