Inspiration

Air pollution kills 7 million people every year. Yet most people have zero real-time awareness of what they're breathing. In India alone, cities like Delhi regularly hit hazardous AQI levels — but residents have no simple tool to know when it's safe to go outside, exercise, or open windows.

What it does

AirPulse gives instant real-time air quality data + AI-powered health advice for any city worldwide. Enter any city, get the current AQI, pollutant breakdown, and personalized health recommendations generated by Google Gemini 2.5 Flash — in seconds, no signup needed.

How I built it

  • Google Gemini 3.6 Flash — generates personalized health advice based on real AQI data
  • WAQI API — real-time air quality data from thousands of monitoring stations worldwide
  • Python Flask — lightweight backend
  • Google Cloud Run — serverless deployment, scales automatically

Challenges

  • Integrating Vertex AI authentication with Cloud Run
  • Crafting Gemini prompts that give practical, actionable advice (not generic warnings)
  • Making the UI clean and fast for global users

What I learned

  • How to combine real-time environmental data with AI to create meaningful health tools
  • Google Cloud Run deployment and Vertex AI integration
  • The scale of the global air pollution crisis — 90% of the world breathes unsafe air

What's next

  • WhatsApp bot for low-data users in developing countries
  • Pollution forecast for next 7 days
  • Personalized alerts based on health conditions
