Airport Control by Favendo

Our app for The Connected Airport Challenge provides tailored and context-aware information to the passenger. We are using beacon technology to make the app location-aware.

Featured information includes

  • Flight departure and boarding times
  • Directions to the proper security check and the correct gate
  • Walking distances to the correct gate from different locations inside the airport
  • Prompts when the passenger moves toward the wrong gate
  • Information concerning the flight itself as well as the the destination (flight duration, arrival time, weather at destination, expected turbulences...)

About the app

Our target users are all departing or arriving passengers. The app intends to make the visit to the airport more relaxing and stressfree. The solution may be integrated into the existing SFO app as a new special feature. This would fit our vision to provide workable solutions for real world problems via location-aware technologies.

The demo app: Airport Control

The app is activated when the user's phone senses an airport beacon bearby and the user is greeted by a welcome message which includes information relevant to his flight. If the user has not previously entered his flight no., he is prompted to do so.

The app then shows the visitor the navigation path from his current location to his gate (our real indoor navigation solution is not implemented in the demo because it would require significant plannung and a roll-out of beacons in order to work).

If the app senses (by ranging nearby beacons) that the user is moving away from his or her gate, the app will prompt the user with a corresponding message.

When the user reaches his departure gate, he is no longer interested in the airport map. He now wants to relax and prepare for his destination. For this reason, once the gate is reached, a full screen information panel pops up with information about boarding and departure times, distances, turbulences and weather at destination.

Demo functionality

All the screens featured above are unaltered screenshots from our iOS demo app. We have also implemented the location-aware funktionality using a simplified case of two beacon transmitters. If the passenger walks towards a beacon, which exemplifies the wrong gate, the prompt featured above is shown. When the passenger nears the beacon exemplifying the correct gate, the above information screen is activated. This functionality could be demoed on stage.

Beacon information:

Correct gate: UUID: e2c56db5-dffb-48d2-b060-d0f5a71096e1 Major: 100 Minor: 2

Wrong gate: UUID: e2c56db5-dffb-48d2-b060-d0f5a71096e1 Major: 100 Minor: 8

Due to time constraints, we were not able to implement all the APIs (weather, actual flight information...) that we had hoped to. As described above, the indoor navigation functionality could not be implemented here - we do, however, have working installations for indoor navigation in multiple locations (video by request).

Favendo is a specialist in everything related to location-based services. We strive to utilize new technologies (for instance, beacon technology) to create smarter, location-aware, apps that cater to the needs of users. We have working installations providing indoor navigation and location-based services in airports, shopping centers, train stations, and museums all across Europe.
