Inspiration

Aviation sector and the linked tourism domain are two of the most impacted areas by COVID19. It is therefore important to rebuild the customer's confidence in air travel and enhance the passenger experience, journey and safety. This is from the flight reservation until the onboarding gate.

What it does

The project aims to build a unique travel passenger log that collects, stores and distributes information regarding passenger individual data, health status and recently visited places to support airport staff and airlines crew to take effective decisions on which passengers would need from additional screening to possible boarding denial at the gate.

The provision and request of real-time information to/from all airspace users,including the passenger will provide a single one-stop shop information distribution system.

How we built it

Factors considered:

  • Considered buying time to collect data in one go is efficient for real-time information sharing and full situational awareness provision to all implied actors (Passengers, Airports and Airspace Operators)
  • Considered ways to ameliorate the desire of passengers to travel, by giving them a sense of comfort knowing that they start their journey in safe conditions at airports and during flight;
  • Considered ways to ameliorate pax data from different vendors under one single system umbrella.
  • Considered ways to enhance the customer experience at the airport
  • Considered ways to further reduce the exposure to the virus at the airport facilities

What we done during this weekend:

Establishing the Team and defined individual roles:

  • Borja: Team Lead and IT Architecture Developer;
  • Raluca: Impact and Solutions Evaluation Analyst;
  • Elisabeth: Market Analyst and Video Publisher;
  • Etienne: Technical Analysis of Airlines and Airports Industry

Finalising the following Products:

  • First draft of Systems’s Concept of Operations;
  • Product logo;Product Video;
  • Promotional Material;

Systems impact on the crisis: reducing the COVID19 spread by affecting data collection (from pax, Aircraft Operators, GDSs) and distribution to the airports staff and crews at the jet bridge.

Systems impact after the crisis: Once deployed, the system will support the efficiency in passenger & flow processing at airports including in a post-crisis environment and maintain a multi-stakeholders cooperation posture against future pandemics.

Challenges we ran into

The necessities that will appear to further develop the project will imply physical building of the system prototype. The system will imply gathering & sharing some personal data which are not yet shared among governmental agencies & air transport stakeholders. New legislation & international agreements will take place to allow further passenger data transfers between relevant stakeholders in a similar manner as the Passenger Name List sharing with the US Agencies post 9/11.

  • Embracing the opportunity to be part a European team
  • Developing some anti-virus business concepts in fields outside our comfort zone
  • Having developed for antivirus solutions in a limited period of time

What we learned

  • App based system concept of operations
  • The hackathon feature: working remotely in an intercultural team under time pressure to get the best output
  • The implication of the COVID19 pandemic in the evolution of air travel.
  • We learned using some new online tools (Miro, Canva, Powtoon)
  • We identify the lack of alignment on statistical data available
  • We put in perspective the need for hub & spoke solutions for natural & medical disasters

What's next for Airport Business Continuity Solutions in the era of COVID19

  • Discuss with medical experts to fine tune the self assessment questionnaire
  • Start coding, which we expect to take approx 3 months
  • Requesting access to other stakeholders (GDS, CRS) to get the data & check the interaction
  • Build a complete app mock-up
  • Contact airlines & airports for precheck & product analysis
  • Further explore the possibilities of data connection/interaction with airport & airline stakeholders
