Kai Kim had cross country practice in 2024 during the Canada fires, and the air quality was horrendous, and Kai had a very hard time running as breathing was nearly impossible. This led to his passion for air quality, which extended to his friends, and now, we want to make something that literally measures the air quality around you at the moment. This product is called AirO, a web-app. It detects air quality using an arduino connected to your computer, and compares the air quality it detects to that of data available online, which in turn allows for not just an understanding of air quality in the local community, but the air quality that directly surrounds one’s immediate vicinity. We used Node.js(React) for the web app aspect, Arduino Uno Q as the board, Arduino IDE to retrieve, communicate, and read air quality data, the air quality sensor to actually measure the air quality, male to male jumper wires to communicate power between the arduino board and the female to female jumper wire connecting the power wires to the air quality sensor. None of us ever connected Arduino to anything before, and only one of our members even used it before, so we were completely lost and did not know where to begin, but we were determined as this cause was very dear to us, so we kept going. Another challenge we had was connecting the IP API we used to the web-app, as there were dozens of different meticulous String formats we got confused with, and eventually we realized the format issues and fixed it. The accomplishments we are proud of are connecting an AI chatbot to our web-app, despite never having experience, a complex arduino board and system connecting to the web-app, and the start we have towards the entirety of the population understanding what air quality really means, and that air quality is not just some numbers. We learned to connect and fetch data from APIs, using Arduino boards with complex algorithms and connecting them to bigger projects, we got good at json formatting. After doing some research, we now know what is next for AirO. We are planning to make it into a bluetooth connectible device that you can leave anywhere to measure air quality of wherever you want, and have the data directly on your phone, computer, or whatever device you want. The future of AirO will create a world aware of its self destruction and finally reverse it, allowing for a clean and breathable world.
