AirMelody
Inspiration
AirMelody was born from a desire to merge the creative world of music with the power of AI. We noticed how many music creators and enthusiasts struggle with generating unique melodies, especially when inspiration runs low or technical skills are limited. Our goal was to create an intuitive tool that empowers users to generate original music based on moods and genres—making the art of music accessible to everyone.
What it does
AirMelody is an AI-powered music generator that creates melodies based on user-selected moods and genres. It leverages Magenta’s music generation models to produce dynamic, high-quality tracks tailored to user preferences. The frontend allows users to interactively choose the mood (e.g., happy, calm, energetic) and genre (e.g., jazz, pop, classical), while the backend handles generation, processing, and delivery of the audio files.
How we built it
AirMelody is built using:
- Flask: Backend API framework to handle requests and generate music using Magenta.
- Magenta: The AI engine for music generation.
- HTML/CSS/JavaScript: A simple and clean frontend to allow users to select their desired mood and genre, and play the generated tracks.
- Bootstrap & Custom CSS: For responsive UI components and animations.
- Python: For integrating the music generation logic with the Flask API.
- ffmpeg: For handling audio conversion and processing.
- Render/Heroku: (or any preferred platform) for hosting the app.
Challenges we ran into
- Model size and performance: The initial music generation models were too large, leading to slow response times and heavy server loads. We optimized the models and compressed the outputs to improve performance.
- Frontend integration: Building a seamless frontend that communicates with the backend in real time was tricky, especially handling audio file downloads and playback.
- Maintaining musical diversity: Ensuring that the generated music sounds fresh and aligns with user moods was a creative challenge that required iterative fine-tuning of the model inputs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully built a functional AI music generator that creates tracks based on mood and genre.
- Created an intuitive and aesthetically pleasing frontend interface.
- Optimized the model for performance while retaining musical quality.
- Enabled audio playback within the app, giving users a seamless experience from generation to listening.
What we learned
- The importance of balancing model complexity and application speed.
- How to use AI tools like Magenta in real-world applications.
- The value of user-centered design when creating tools that bridge technology and art.
- Techniques for integrating backend APIs with a frontend music player.
What's next for AirMelody
- Enhance model diversity: Introduce more instruments, genres, and moods.
- User accounts and playlist features: Allow users to save and revisit their favorite tracks.
- Live audio generation: Streamline the generation process to provide near-instantaneous music previews.
- Collaborative features: Enable users to collaborate on music tracks or remix AI-generated pieces.
- Mobile app version: Bring AirMelody to mobile platforms for on-the-go music generation.
