How we started
We wanted to make an impact on society as the hackathon's title was "HACK FOR CHANGE", we came up with the idea of giving vision to blind people, started researching the topic and we found out there was a similar product available in the US Market. Then we checked the price of the available product and it was tremendously expensive around ₹3 Lakhs and not available easily in India, and we checked the population of blinds in India and found out that India currently has around 12 million blind people against 39 million globally -- which makes India home to one-third of the world’s blind population. Then we had a thought, discussed it that we can make a similar product under ₹10,000, and started working on it. we named our product/project as AiRIS.
Our Mission
Our mission is to harness the power of artificial vision by incorporating pioneering technology into a wearable platform(Glasses) which improves the lives of individuals who are blind and visually impaired at very low costs.
AiRIS is AI for your eye. They use the power of speech to make everyday life more accessible for any visual impairment or blind.
It is a device for blind, that can give them a vision.
How we built it and Challenges we ran into
We started building AiRIS, first, we developed our software in which we can detect objects, recognize humans, read live text from a feed, then we tested it with a webcam and it was working fine, then we integrated the software into a very small and compact hardware camera module, which can be integrated with glasses, then we interfaced it with a Bluetooth module which is connected to the pair of earpieces, then we faced a major problem of powering it, so we came up with an idea to power up the whole system with a very small in size battery with a great battery holding charge 450 + 100 mAH of power. then we faced another issue, that the battery we're using is only 3.7 Volts and our circuit requires 5 volts and every charger has an output of 5 volts, then we added an additional component and converted 3.7 volts to 5 volts and vice-versa so we can also charge our batteries with regular 5V chargers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are able to achieve our vision in very less time and way cheaper than other solutions available in the markets.
What we learned
Learnt a lot about many things. AI/ML Modules, Obtained hardware knowledge.
What's next for AiRIS
For future scope, we will add many features like AI Assitance, currency recognization, Scene description, more compact design and longer battery life.
