Our Inspiration
We were first inspired by people ages 65+ and technology illterate persons who have difficulty in this day and age travelling. Nowadays, everything is linked to technology for the convivence and efficiency it provides; though it doesn't account for the generational disconnect a lot of people experience. As we went further, we discovered due to lack of updates, unclear directions, and other difficulties individuals who are tech savy persons, even though enjoy the convivence of using mobile, regularly experience frustrations with airport travel, thus we decided to make an app to combat this problem.
What does it do?
We designed a mobile app called AirFair, making airport travel/check-in process fair for all, whether they be technology literate or not. It reduces the check in time at the air ports, holds your boarding pass, Id (Clear ID), health pass, and provides additional resources into one function. You can check the airport map, your itinerary, flight status, and there is even a chatbot for additional customer service options. On the hamburger menu you can view your account, notification settings, accessibility options, and help.
The Process
First, we had brainstormed the three prompts, and after listening to ideas and discussions, we talked about what features would be good to include, and how much easier we can make the app. We decided to make the app wallet based, where a person can easily take pictures of the QR codes, the passes, or even insert the boarding pass number into the app which will automatically update the map of your airport, bag check in options, etc; we did two rounds of paper wireframing, the first round, we discussed how we would imagine the app, and how it would look. After a comparison, we went back in and chose screens from the first round and incorporated it into our second. We then discussed and eliminated our pages choosing which would be most functional and best. The first day we completed steps 1-3 for Discover, Research and Empathize, and Define, and we also sent out a Google form survey. This survey was sent through multiple Discords, including this one, and on Linked in.
By the next day, 40+ persons responded, most of them fell into the age range of 20-41, which is Gen X and Millennials which experienced next to no difficulties with check in, though had problems navigating the airport and getting through TSA/security. Based on this, it further validated our point that by incorporating an app which speeds up the check in process can minimize wait times getting through check out by readily having your boarding pass and ID's available. Day two we completed the lo-fi and mid fi options. We organized the screens and plotted out our icon, did a usability test, and started research.
By day three, we completed the high fi, had three responses to the usability test, and finished our color coding, prototype and research.
Challenges we faced
The main challenge was getting a clear voice from the older generation. Mainly we got responses from younger gens, who where tech savy and didn't have much issues navigating check in. Though we still thought that this app would be useful to compile information for easier access.
What we are Proud Of
There are quite a few things we are proud of. We successfully prototyped a way to easily gather documents for airport travel. We preformed two different types of user research during a two day Hackathon, and we also are also proud of the design of our app.
What we Learned
We learned more about the component aspect, also that there are a lot of different preferences when it comes to air travel throughout different generations.
The Next Steps
If we were allowed to go further, we would fully flush out the app, add backend securities for account info, and expand accessibility options.
