Inspiration
Whenever I go to throw something out, it crosses my mind that it may be recyclable. Moreover, I am sometimes confused on what parts of it may be recyclable. However, with this app, I no longer have to deal with the mental anguish from potentially passing up the opportunity to recycle.
What it does
Our app passes an uploaded image to Gemini AI and gives the user information on whether or not the item in question is recyclable.
How we built it
We utilized react and tailwind along with a little vibe-coding to create the front-end. We prompt engineered GeminiAPI to identify whether an image uploaded (the user input) was recyclable or not.
Challenges we ran into
Initializing the front-end was challenging because we did not have much experience with the frontend. Moreover, collaborating simultaneously on a project of this scale was also a first, so there were issues with github. Our initial project was much more ambitious, but we did not develop it in time, so we resorted to this as a backup idea and started halfway through the hackathon.
What we learned
We learned how to implement GeminiAPI and initialize the frontend. We also learned more about how to collaborate using github.
What's next for AIRecycler
Perhaps we can add additional functionalities for AIRecycler such that it is able to tell the user how to not just whether something is recyclable, but how it can be repurposed.
